The Patient Activation Network Podcast is live at the 2017 Planetree International Conference on Patient-Centered Care. Our next guest is Judi T. Campbell MD, Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Staff Physiatrist, Carolinas Healthcare System. Judi shares a personal story of why she got into medicine, why she had to step away and how an experience with a patient’s family member had a profound impact on her career. All this and more on this edition of the Patient Activation Network podcast.
The way we communicate with one another is a critical element to transforming healthcare outcomes in the United States and abroad. In this session, a doctor shares her story of why she went to medical school and why she later put down her stethoscope to take a break from medicine. Within months of her return, she experienced the greatest emotional challenge of her career with a patient’s family member. The way it was handled and the subsequent lessons learned will be discussed, along with strategies to deepen our relationships with patients. Outcomes of enhanced trust and loyalty and reduced suffering will be revealed. Why is this so important? Because what we say and how we say it can impact another person for a lifetime.
By the end of this session, participants will have a better of understanding of how to:
•Assess the emotional state of the patient and family, and respond in a meaningful way
•Understand the importance of eliciting the patient narrative in way that conveys respect and value
•Improve job satisfaction and reduce burnout through enhanced relationship with patients and colleagues
